What does it take for that spark of inspiration to be an entrepreneur?
Being an entrepreneur is difficult enough without the proper mindset. Enter the competition without the right drive, and you might as well leave now. Not just anyone can wake up and decide that they want to create the next global business that will transform their target market. There is meticulous planning and execution that goes into creating the perfect business. And above all there is creativity. Creativity and a willingness to adapt is paramount to crafting the ideal business. Without these two key ingredients, any business will meet with a premature demise.
Because I see the world through the lens of innovation, I pick up on small details and patterns that all spark new ideas. These innovative ideas drive me to create business strategies and maximize profit. The problem that I find with the modern workplace is that politics and frivolous formalities overshadow the potential for creativity. During my brief stunt, my boss found himself consumed with the daily minutia that hindered any potential growth. Everyday people at work would gossip about the most mundane of topics such as last night’s dinner or the weather. No one there proposed any changes in the business. Any kind of proposal for change made by me was immediately dismissed as foolhardy and my suggestions inappropriately superseded my office. They refused to see beyond the lines. If my office was designated as a junior analyst, they refused to see beyond the label. My bosses would make a mockery out of their work environment by sitting at desks all day crunching numbers doing the same day after day or playing games. Never did they ask anyone if their business model was outdated. Never did they question "Why have we not grown since 2016?". As a result, their ranking in the Inc top 500 stagnated and dissipated. However, working at my old place of employment taught me one very valuable lesson; never settle for the daily grind and innovate.
Now months later, having decided to reawaken my old startup enterprises, I remember to apply some of the key lessons that I gained from my year as a pencil pusher. Here are several of my key rules.
If something seems off or wrong, voice your opinion.
Too often things were going south but people would over look changing the status quo out of fear of upper management or more paperwork. If you see that things are not working or numbers are below for the month, reassess and see if there are other methods that may work better. Each one deserves trial and error before cementing it.
Don’t ever settle.
Real changemakers always find that there is room for improvement… and don’t fuss about it. If you find yourself accepting that all is alright with your startup then it is actually the perfect time to find new improvements to be had. Mediocrity stems from the belief that your business is just “ok” and that things are ok as they are. Innovate! Think! Are there more things that you could be changing or doing better? Pros and cons?
And most importantly see if there is any way you can ignite that spark of creativity in your business or startup.
Don’t be a pencil pusher. Push the limits. See if there is some radical idea that might light the fire under your startup. Be it advertising or the core business model. There is no idea as a stupid thought. The best innovators in the world constantly push new products and ideas out in the world. Without their imagination and willingness to challenge the status quo we would never had had Apple, Tesla, or Mac.
